The SaaS Complaint Index · Issue #1

What SaaS founders & users actually complained about this week

Every week we scan Reddit, Hacker News, X and GitHub for the pain points people say out loud. Verbatim, sourced, ranked by how loud the room got. If your product fixes one of these — the people below are your pipeline.

Week 24, 2026 · published June 11 · corpus: 22 Reddit threads, 15 HN stories, 14 X posts, 17 GitHub items · by ComplaintScout

01AI pricing meter shock (the week's loudest pain)

"Heavy users report bills jumping 25x — $29 to $750." · "I used 8% of my monthly credits in two hours."

GitHub Copilot switched to usage-based AI credits on June 1 and the developer world is furious — not just about price, about predictability. Five separate HN stories this week, a 48-comment VS Code issue demanding credit-burn transparency, and founders adding: "AI pricing is getting harder to explain to normal users."

02"Distribution is 10x harder than building"

"I thought the hardest part would be building the product. Turns out distribution is 10x harder."

The consensus complaint of 2026. The reference thread ("How the f*ck am I supposed to get paid users for my SaaS?", 120 pts, 155 comments) keeps getting quoted, and Indie Hackers threads converge on the same line: everyone can build now, almost no one can sell.

03Launched to crickets

"I'm shutting down my AI video SaaS after $1,078 in ads and 226 users."

The postmortems keep coming — same arc every time: months building, launch to silence, ads as a hail-mary, shutdown. An open-source archive (SaaS Heaven) now exists just to collect these stories.

04Retention: the half nobody talks about

"What's the hardest part of building a SaaS that users keep paying for?"

Ask HN question of the week. Acquisition gets all the content; keeping users paying month 3+ is the silent killer — churn complaints cluster around onboarding gaps and "they never came back after day one".

05AI fatigue is now a user pain

"I'm Tired of Talking to AI." · "Why is the HN crowd so anti-AI?"

Two front-page HN threads in one window. Users are exhausted by AI being shoved into every flow — which is quietly becoming a positioning opportunity for tools that lead with human-made or AI-optional.

06Idea-envy grind

"How do these X SaaS founders come up with hundreds of app ideas and launch every week? I struggle to find even 1 good one a month."

31 points, 40 comments of founders admitting the same. The thread's best answer: they don't invent ideas, they harvest complaints (we agree — it's our whole method).

07Credibility noise: "is everyone just an AI expert now?"

"Is everyone just an AI expert now?"

58 points of founders tired of the expert-flood on their feeds. Trust is the scarce resource — buyers increasingly screen for proof-of-work over claims.

08The first-customer wall (and how rare crossing it is)

"I finally got my first paying customer, I'm going to cry 😭"

459 points, 172 comments — the single highest-engagement post in our corpus. When merely getting ONE customer is front-page news, you know where everyone else is stuck.

09Clone anxiety

"Whatever you're building, AI can build a 70% version in a weekend."

Founders increasingly assume the feature set is copyable in a week — pushing moat-talk away from product and toward distribution, brand and community.

10Validation theater vs. building

"Founders get so caught up in trying to make the perfect application, perfect idea, perfect pitch, instead of just building."

YC rejection week brought this one out — an 18-year-old claiming 375K users with no funding became the counter-example everyone argued about.
